Something from her own kitchen first. Then the textbook words. Then a question back, to check it landed.
Get the aluminium foil from your kitchen. Crush a piece into a tight ball, drop it in a mug of water. It sinks. Now flatten that same piece into a little boat and set it on the water. It floats. Same foil, same weight. The only thing that changed is how much water it shoves out of the way.
The water you shove aside pushes back up. That upward push is buoyant force, and Archimedes’ principle says it equals the weight of the water displaced.
Weight on its own never decides. It is a tug of war. The ship is huge and hollow, so before it has sunk even a few metres it has already shoved aside thousands of tonnes of water, and all of that water pushes back up. The tug of war goes even, and the ship stops sinking. The nail is tiny and solid. Fully underwater it shoves aside about a spoon of water. A spoon of water cannot hold up iron.
Displaced water weighs as much as you do → you float. Less than you → you sink.
Same idea, written as one number. Relative density is your density divided by water’s. Solid iron comes to 7.8, far heavier than water, so the nail sinks. A ship is steel plus an enormous amount of trapped air, and the whole thing averages out around 0.3. Under 1 floats, over 1 sinks.
Your steel tiffin box is the same story. Lid shut, it bobs in a bucket. Open the lid, water rushes in, the air leaves, the average crosses 1, and down it goes.
